29 (All the people, even the tax collectors, when they heard Jesus’ words, acknowledged that God’s way was right, because they had been baptized by John.30 But the Pharisees and the experts in the law rejected God’s purpose for themselves, because they had not been baptized by John.) 31 Jesus went on to say, “To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other:
“‘We played the pipe for you, and you did not dance;we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.’
33 For John the Baptist came neither eating bread nor drinking wine, and you say, ‘He has a demon.’ 34 The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and you say, ‘Here is a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners.’ 35 But wisdom is proved right by all her children.”
Jesus Anointed by a Sinful Woman
36 When one of the Pharisees invited Jesus to have dinner with him, he went to the Pharisee’s house and reclined at the table. 37 A woman in that town who lived a sinful life learned that Jesus was eating at the Pharisee’s house, so she came there with an alabaster jar of perfume. 38 As she stood behind him at his feet weeping, she began to wet his feet with her tears. Then she wiped them with her hair, kissed them and poured perfume on them. 39 When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “If this man were a prophet, he would know who is touching him and what kind of woman she is—that she is a sinner.” 40 Jesus answered him, “Simon, I have something to tell you.” “Tell me, teacher,” he said. 41 “Two people owed money to a certain moneylender. One owed him five hundred denarii, and the other fifty. 42 Neither of them had the money to pay him back, so he forgave the debts of both. Now which of them will love him more?” 43 Simon replied, “I suppose the one who had the bigger debt forgiven.” “You have judged correctly,” Jesus said. 44 Then he turned toward the woman and said to Simon, “Do you see this woman? I came into your house. You did not give me any water for my feet, but she wet my feet with her tears and wiped them with her hair. 45 You did not give me a kiss, but this woman, from the time I entered, has not stopped kissing my feet. 46 You did not put oil on my head, but she has poured perfume on my feet. 47 Therefore, I tell you, her many sins have been forgiven—as her great love has shown. But whoever has been forgiven little loves little.” 48 Then Jesus said to her, “Your sins are forgiven.” 49 The other guests began to say among themselves, “Who is this who even forgives sins?” 50 Jesus said to the woman, “Your faith has saved you; go in peace.”
The most beautiful title ever given to Jesus was a friend of sinners. You cannot legislate love, you can’t force it. you can encourage it but u can’t demand it or command. It has to be won the heart has to be captivated. Many people are still not convinced that just preaching Jesus is enough the love of God is attractive enough to keep someone…..
Simon who is a pharisee and a woman that is a prostitute both of them have been forgiven and the dichotomy of one barely notices him and one can’t stop adoring him. this is the same as the story of those cancelled debts and their amount of gratitude and love.
When Jesus is not a bog deal or you are full of your own righteousness he isn’t that important because u have every bit to do with where u are and he doesn’t. we can’t preach jesus and fill ourselves with righteousness. When you get accepted what makes God so good? Its when you know He accepted you before you became righteous on your own thats a big deal. its not our own righteousness its Gods that makes us like Him! Ours is like filthy rags in comparison.
There are two kind of people law breakers and law keeps. isn’t it sad the most zealous people that love Jesus most radically are baby christians… that have known Him the shortest time!
Compare a crack addict redeemed and a good ole southern boy redeemed… where with the adoration normally be most extreme?
Jesus says your sins are forgiven and you don’t have to pay anything! who loves the most in the parable.. the one forgiven the most but the POINT of the parable is no one could pay their debt.
No one can pay the debt of sin but Jesus!
We should not harp on the brokenness of man! Without Him we can do nothing but through Him we can do all things we should harp on His capability. People don’t like grace preaching because they aren’t convinced they don’t need it yet. How do you get a generation to love like the love of women washing His feet with her tears? Its not about BEHAVIORS its about the heart. If he has your heart the behavior isn’t so burdensome and grievous.
If He is in the room and you do not WANT to give, its because you have not realized you could not pay for what He has given you, forgiven of you, or sacrificed for you. The women that poured out her alabaster box gave all she had of worth because she didn’t need it any more because He changed her heart and it changed her life.
The only time a women was to take her hair down was on her wedding night according to jewish costumes. This woman took her hair down and made the decision Jesus was the ONE man in her life forever and when the church despised her Jesus let her off the hook covered her sins and forgave her redeemed her cleansed her. Jesus was just concerned about HER. Aren’t you glad God isn’t concerned about others opinions of you He makes decisions for Himself. Jesus did nothing but defended the women when the church people would have bounced her.
Jesus told the pharisees you are white washed tombs beautiful not he outside but full of dead mens bones not committing sins in secret but full of self. He knew SHE had committed more sins than them all but sin is sin and no one can pay. Forgiving of much is not the number of sins it is the awareness that we are all damned and He is our way to eternal life. When you seek Jesus and allow Him to change our hearts we don’t have to force behavior change… When did Jesus stop being enough.
The thing we hear and preach about the least is the finished work… the full impact of what Jesus DID! If we preach Him and if He be lifted up people will run to the cross… He is enough to win over hearts. He won the heart of a prostate when the church ignored her. He is enough.
Everything we give God by lifestyle and works they are honoring to God but they do NOT make you righteous. WIth them or without righteousness IS A GIFT. If we know this all works and behavior of godliness will follow. John said HIS commandments are not heavy or burdensome because when you come to the understanding of what HE has done will make them joyous.
Grace is unmerited unearned favor and acceptance that frees us form the need to perform again. Can you believe in HIS beauty enough…that all things that are ungodly fall away form your life.. they become undesirable. If we want to win the earth we have to show them HIM!
Without Him we are lost but with Him we can do all things through Christ. The abundance of grace and the gift of righteousness is what is offered. Grace is one thing people shy in disbelief but hope its real and true.
We can never love Jesus the way He deserves. The women loved Him so deeply because she knew there was nothing she could do to make up for what she had destroyed. We cannot be more sin conscious than Jesus conscious. Hebrews says have no more consciousness of sin…
All He gave the women was forgiveness… not a sermon… not a lecture.. not a list of things to do.
The bible is not an overwhelming to do list. Jesus said in all the lists that have been given to do and not to do let me clarify… Love the Lord your God with all your heart all your mind and all your strength. Love your neighbor as yourself. Let the beauty of who God is move you to your very core. When she let her hair down she made a commitment saying I am married to you forever. We need to be a generation that is committed to Him, a generation that will let their hair down and commit.
Come to a place your reality is… You are Gods favorite.. I am Gods favorite…!
